Iomairt Nis firmly believes that education and
training are vital to the economic, social and cultural development of the
Ness community. Working in close partnership with key providers, like
the University of the Highlands & Islands (UHI) -
Lews Castle College, we we aim
to deliver first class vocational and academic courses at the Ness Learning
Centre. |
| |
| Over the past few years the
Ness Learning Centre has successfully provided structured courses in a wide range of subjects,
including: Computing; First Aid;
calligraphy; desktop publishing; the internet for beginners; Open
Learning for registered students; European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL);
Gaelic BA degree studies; local history; remote learning & video
conferencing. |

|
Lews Castle College's
learning centres are fully equipped with state of the art learning
technology, and, equally importantly, staffed by people who can help you
learn how to use it, introducing you to computers and all their uses. |
We aim to offer as varied a range of classes
as possible, particularly in the evenings. Courses can be very flexible,
designed to meet the challenges of individual communities according to need,
and students and potential students are encouraged to participate in shaping
what types of courses can be delivered locally.

| Northern Lewis is also
justifiably proud of the three schools that are located within the Ness and
'West Side' communities - Lionel, Cross and
Airidhantuim - all of which
provide excellent standards of education for our youngsters.
Cross and Airidhantuim are the smaller of the
two schools, providing primary 1-7 education only in their own respective
catchment areas. Secondary 1-2 pupils from Ness and the 'West Side'
areas attend Lionel School before later completing their Year 3-6 education
at the island's principal senior school, the Nicolson Institute in
Stornoway.
All three schools are also available for
evening meetings and activities, particularly Lionel, which also has a
swimming pool which is open to the public outside school hours.
